Recent History of the Properties:

Surrounded on three sides by MBC property, these homes are owned by grand-daughters of Arthur Gwynne, the former owner of the MBC, who purchased the club in 1949.  In 1960, the Buffum family, owners of the Weekapaug Inn in Rhode Island, purchased the club and continue to operate it.  Mr. Gwynne’s family has continued to own property on Manasota Key for almost 60 years.

Manasota Key (Sarasota County)

Manasota Key is a long, narrow barrier island on the west coast of Florida extending nine miles south from Venice to Englewood. It protects the waters of Lemon Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway from the wind and waves of the Gulf of Mexico, and provides an ideal environment for wildlife. The calm water on Lemon Bay is ideal for canoeing and kayaking or fishing for snook hiding near the shore. On the Gulf side, the Key has a continuous, undiscovered beach rich in shells for beachcombing or just walking for miles. The center of the island, where this property is located, benefits from lush vegetation—lots of mangroves, palms, and Australian pines—to shelter and give privacy to the modest houses on the beach and the bay. Both residents and visitors find the tranquility of old Florida, lost in so much of the state, is still preserved here.

For more practical concerns, restaurants and shopping centers are located within a 10-minute drive on the mainland where you will also find golf, tennis, cinemas, and even a small amusement park for the kids. Further to the north are the charming cities of Venice and Sarasota with the Ringling Museum of Art, Mote Marine Aquarium, many fine restaurants, and live theatre productions.

Be as active or as relaxed as you like in this little bit of paradise on the Florida Gulf Coast!
